Open letter to my Member of Congress:

Dear Sir/Madam,

If we don’t speak up, who will?

If we don’t speak up, who will?

I am writing to you today to bring to your attention my concern regarding the use of glyphosate in this State (Nation). I personally believe that the entire ecosystem is connected and that a pesticide or herbicide that is sprayed in one location affects the surrounding locations. Glyphosate is the main ingredient in the herbicide and pesticide Roundup. If it can destroy anything living around the crops etc., then it can also work its way up the food chain into all living things.

I personally have experienced glyphosate toxicity and have dealt with a deterioration in my health because of it. Consequently, I choose to buy organic foods and support businesses that do not partake in the use of glyphosate in food production. However, this does not free me from inadvertent exposure such as living down-wind from sprayed crop lands, or from foods that are not labeled correctly. For example, all foods that have soy lecithin in them pose a potential risk, as soybeans are one of the crops most heavily laden with glyphosate. This also harms the bees, amphibians, and wild animals that live within and around the run off from crop lands.

I believe it is the responsibility of our elected officials to oversee regulation of industry according to the cause of environmental justice. All regulation must be targeted to protect people and the environment from harm rather than protecting industry interests.

I also believe that it is the responsibility of our state and federal representative to ensure air and water quality and to implement mandatory water testing for glyphosate in all public water systems and offer free testing for those with private wells, especially those wells in proximity to agricultural lands. Negligence towards these basic needs is negligence towards the electoral constituency you represent.

I am writing to you today to ask you to ensure glyphosate and any other pesticide or herbicide that has the potential to destroy the environment is banned, not only in this State, but on a federal and international level. We want clean air, clean water, and clean food.

In addition, I am asking for the government to support access to organic agriculture. Raw foods, small farmers, and sustainable agricultural practices are the only way to preserve nutritional content of our food, ensure local economies are maintained, and the living beings on this earth thrive.

Next time you have a glass of wine or eat a pizza, know that more than likely it has glyphosate in it unless you have expressly chosen organic or know where it was sourced from. If you or your friends and family suffer from unexplained health conditions, gluten intolerance, thyroid dysfunction, headaches, bloating, cancer, environmental sensitivities, or other conditions, glyphosate may be responsible.

For the sake of my, your, and our children’s future, the time to act is now. Toxic agricultural practices are the largest culprit in climate change. It is unknown how much longer life can be supported under these conditions.

Thank you for taking the time to consider these matters and taking appropriate action.

Sincerely,
